THE ITALIAN BLUE LIFESTYLE

The afternoon will be moderated and hosted by Fabio Pozzo, Journalist, La Stampa

Institutional Opening Session

2.00 – 3.30 PM

From boating to tourism, from hospitality to design, water becomes a creative environment where “Made in Italy” finds one of its most dynamic expressions: the “Italian Blue Lifestyle.” The Blue Economy and its related industries (11% of GDP) now represent a strategic driver for the country’s growth, with a significant impact on the national economy and its global competitiveness. The real challenge today is to build solid connections between different sectors and stakeholders—boating, tourism, hospitality, design, industry, and local communities—to transform widespread excellence into a coherent and competitive system. In the opening session of the Blue Design Summit, we aim to explore new paths to reignite a phase of growth in the sector, in which La Spezia stands as one of the most internationally recognized hubs.

THE DESIGN

10.00 – 10.45 AM

Whether it refers to visual style, touch and feel, atmosphere, solid engineering of physical elements, functions and services, or equipment and fittings: on a superyacht, design must be holistic, because the sea and the clients are unforgiving.

FUTURE-PROOF DESIGNS OF SUPERYACHTS

10.45 AM – 11.30 AM

In today’s rapidly evolving landscape of technological innovation and the ever-changing energy transition, building a superyacht that merely meets current expectations is no longer enough. Owners are seeking long-term value, and the yachts of tomorrow must be ready to evolve. A vessel delivered today will need to operate through a decade of unprecedented changes in fuel technologies, energy systems, propulsion solutions, and onboard innovations. To safeguard both the investment and the yacht’s relevance, future-proofing is no longer an option but a necessity. Designing a truly future-proof superyacht begins with an adaptable technical platform, designed to allow for seamless upgrades and refits. This approach ensures that emerging technologies and next-generation energy solutions can be integrated with minimal impact on the yacht’s structure, layout, and luxury experience. The real question is: are today’s most discerning owners ready to adopt a design strategy that prepares their yacht for tomorrow’s innovations? Forward-thinking clients recognize that flexibility built in today safeguards performance, value, and environmental responsibility for years to come.

INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABLE FUTURES

11.30 AM – 12.30 PM

On closer inspection, the new environmental regulations governing yachting are merely the legal seal on a trend that has been evident for some time in the preferences of various categories of boat owners and clients. The broader “leave no trace” movement is gaining traction, starting with the segment most interested in it—explorers—who set out specifically to sail to pristine locations. Demographic shifts among clients are also driving this trend. But the boating industry is not immune to the phenomenon (and temptation) of greenwashing. Some of the industry’s key players discuss this issue.

THE NEW FRONTIERS OF SAILING

2.00 – 2.45 PM

Sailing has really picked up speed, both in terms of innovation and in reality. For decades a very traditional sector—in the best sense of the word—sailing on yachts and superyachts is now undergoing a full-scale evolution and revolution. From foiling, which is bringing speed back to the characteristics of sailing downwind, to ever-larger superyachts. The days of skepticism in the America’s Cup and the Club Med I scandal seem long gone, as does the astonishment at the Maltese Falcon. What does the future hold?

WATER AND EARTH: SYNERGIES AND INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE TWO ENVIRONMENTS

The physical locations of blue markets interact in ways that are more complex than merely functional (mooring, service, destination), tending to offer a multisensory environment in which it is increasingly difficult to clearly separate what is nautical, what is residential, and what is hospitality and entertainment.

THREE FACETS OF THE BLUE LIFESTYLE

This section explores three key areas that will shape the future of yachting: the convergence of yachting, cruising, and hospitality with the emergence of a new class of vessels; innovations below deck that will both follow and drive the evolution of these vessels; and interior materials, which are becoming increasingly important for the multisensory experience they bring to blue lifestyles.
